Welcome to loveMELT, a newsletter
Happy V-day you Fine Freaks,
Did you guys know that tiny arachnids live on our faces? They’re called Demodex mites and they tend to nestle in our eyelashes. At night, they crawl around on our faces to mate. And because they have mouths but not anuses, they explode when they die. This is a seemingly strange fact I learned during an episode of Sean Caroll’s Mindscape podcast in which Ziya Tong discusses realities we don’t see. The episode covers a range of topics, but I thought I’d share that wildcard snippet.
moving on.
For those of you who live in this world, you understand it’s, ‘digitally market yourself or bust’...luckily OUR bodies won’t physically combust…just all of our creative hopes and dreams will shatter into tiny pieces.
So, here I am writing to you. I quit my job and am getting back to my creative ways. I’m working on my website, sadiemonroe.com, and am starting this newsletter, loveMELT. Who knows what I’ll share with you a couple of times a month, but I promise it will come from an authentic place. Please feel free to respond, share in return, or unsubscribe, no hard feelings.
People who know me well are familiar with how much I enjoy sharing and learning about new music, books, knowledge, podcasts, resources, happenings, art, insights, and inspiring things my friends are up to….pretty much anything I find interesting I want to know about it and share it. So when it comes to loveMELT, expect some sort of mashup of all of the above in a freeform, conversational, longer than an instagram #hashtag format.
Speaking of sharing a recent find. I’ve become engrossed in rhizome.org. There’s some really interesting stuff on their website.
Rhizome champions born-digital art and culture through commissions, exhibitions, digital preservation, and software development. Founded by artist Mark Tribe as a listserve including some of the first artists to work online, Rhizome has played an integral role in the history of contemporary art engaged with digital technologies and the internet. – Rhizome.org
It’s also now affiliated with the New Museum in NYC. Wondering why the name Rhizome? It was inspired by Rhizome philosophy… a thought-provoking subject matter notably divulged by French philosopher Gilles Deleuze and the French psychoanalyst Félix Guattari. Check out their 1980 book, A Thousand Plateaus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia to learn more about it. You can also meander through this free, illustrated audiobook version and let your mind play as you listen to the words.
How did I learn about these philosophers’ thoughts? Through a School of the Visual Arts Continuing Education course with Keren Moscovitch (She/Her). If you’re looking for creative online learning, of the countless hours I’ve spent Zooming, these courses are the most well spent. Shout out to Bianca, a BFF and Feng Shui Consultant at Wilder, who’s also taking courses at SVA Continuing ED...get it get it get it.
That’s it for now. I’ve got more in store for you as we proceed down this digital journey together. If someone pops into mind who you think will enjoy this dialogue, send them the very first loveMELT letter so they can subscribe and stay tuned.
Bang Bang,
Sadie Monroe
